T-Minus Six Days

We are fast approaching moving day. Our house is eighty-five percent packed and ready to go. We are now getting down to the annoying things like giant framed pictures, miscellaneous books, small knick-knacky things, and odds and ends. What do you do with a giant bottle of liquid fence (an acid smelling rodent, rabbit, and deer repellent for gardens) when you are moving into a two bedroom apartment on campus? It's these philosophical questions that boggle the mind when you are preparing to move.

Yesterday we took the cats to the vet in their brand spanking new cat carriers. We haven't had the cats to the vet in (ahem) several years. They stay indoors all of the time so they don't have any contact with other cats in the area and they are pretty healthy and active. But since we are moving we figured that it would be good to get them shots and have them checked out before we leave. It was a relatively uneventful trip to the vet, but the cats sang us a song the entire way there and back - preview of things to come next Monday for seven hours I guess. Everybody came out fine in the end and I think the only thing injured was their pride. They spent the remainder of the day licking their wounds and dealing with the indignation.

All of this came on the heels of a great fourth of July weekend. It was nice to not worry too much about packing or anything really for a couple of days. The Hudson parade was a typical small town Wisconsin summer parade. The highlights included royalty from all of the small towns in the St. Croix/Polk County area, every piece of fire equipment owned by the city of Hudson, a portapotty on a trailer, and "Mr. Rooter" - a sewer cleaning service based in Hudson. The highlight of Mr. Rooter's float was a dude sitting on a toilet with his pants around his ankles. Hooray for America! Happy birthday USA.

After the parade our car wouldn't start so we called Jim and Ann Marie - thank goodness we were in Hudson. Otherwise we would have probably needed to call a service center on a holiday weekend which I'm sure would not have been cheap. Jim came and jump started the car and it worked! After that we were on our way to Amery to visit Mike. We were going to follow the Amery band bus to town but we were delayed with the car. Instead we got to town an hour later than we planned. We had a nice dinner at the local pizza joint and then we played a cone toss game at the ice cream parlor called "Ellie's" and I won fifty percent off my ice cream cone (it really is about the little pleasures in life).

Sunday we went back to Hudson and spent the day at Ann Marie and Jim's house for their annual party. It was a great time and I saw a lot of people that I haven't seen for a long time. We were in Hudson until 10 PM and then we came back to town and met up with Carmen and Oscar. They are getting married this weekend and are spending this week getting ready for the festivities. All of the wedding party begins to arrive in town Wednesday and by Friday everyone will be here. Perhaps we can offer them all a box to sit on at our house.
